- leadership in developing national statements of attributes and competencies for the dental and oral health professions;
- developing national accreditation standards for education and training courses leading to registration of graduates as dental practitioners;
- implementing accreditation processes for education and training courses that are peer-based, independent, professional, effective and well regarded by the public, the profession, educational institutions, registration authorities and Government; and
- assessing the qualifications and conducting examinations of overseas qualified dental professionals leading to registration for practice in Australia.
- assess, for the purpose of granting accreditation, programs leading to eligibility for registration as an occupational therapist to practise in Australia or New Zealand;
- advise and make recommendations to the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA) relating to the accredited status to be granted to an occupational therapy program;
- advise and make recommendations to AHPRA on matters concerning the registration of occupational therapists;
- develop, review and maintain accreditation standards and processes to assess occupational therapy programs;
- develop and implement an overseas skills assessment process to ensure the knowledge, clinical skills and professional attributes of overseas-trained occupational therapists are of an equivalent standard to occupational therapists in Australia and New Zealand;
- provide information and advice to Government concerning the adequacy of a person’s qualifications and skills in the field of occupational therapy for the purposes of migration to Australia and New Zealand;
- assess authorities in other countries who conduct examinations, or accredit programs of study relevant to registration as an occupational therapist, to decide whether persons who successfully complete the examinations or programs of study conducted or accredited by the authorities have the knowledge, clinical skills and professional attributes necessary to practise the profession in Australia and New Zealand;
- provide information and advice to Government relating to law and policy concerning accreditation and competency requirements for the registration of occupational therapists;
- establish and maintain relationships with bodies or organisations having objectives and functions in whole or in part similar to the objectives and functions of OTC.

ANZOC has been delegated the authority of accreditation of osteopathic educational programs and the assessment of overseas qualified osteopath for purpose of registration in Australia and New Zealand. This delegation is pursuant to the Australian legislation: The Health Practitioner Regulation National Law Act (2009) and the New Zealand legislation: The Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act (2003). The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) recognises ANZOC as the assessing authority for the purposes of skilled migration (for osteopathy) in Australia.

The Optometry Council of Australia and New Zealand (OCANZ) was established in 1996 with support of the optometrists registration boards in Australia and New Zealand, the Heads of the Optometry Schools, the Optometrists Association of Australia and the New Zealand Optometric Association.
